Made by Hand, Made to Last

A Bulberry piece takes between 16 and 40 hours to complete. There are no shortcuts in our process — each step is performed by hand, with techniques refined over generations of Vietnamese leather craft.

Full-grain leather hides being inspected

Leather Selection

We work exclusively with full-grain leather — the highest quality grade, where the natural surface is preserved. Our master leather buyer selects each hide personally, checking for consistency of grain, thickness, and colour. We source primarily from Italian and Japanese tanneries known for vegetable-tanned hides that develop a rich patina over time.

Only about 30% of hides we inspect meet our standards. The rest are returned. This selectivity is expensive, but it's the foundation of every piece we make.

Pattern & Cutting

Each pattern is designed in-house and refined through multiple prototypes before production begins. Our cutters lay each pattern piece by hand, reading the leather's natural grain to ensure strength and beauty align. Every cut considers the hide's character — where it stretches, where it's firmest, where the grain is most beautiful.

We cut one piece at a time. A weekend bag uses up to 18 individual leather panels, each cut from a specific area of the hide.

Saddle Stitching

Unlike machine stitching, which uses a single thread in a lockstitch pattern, our artisans use the traditional saddle stitch — two needles, one thread, passing through each hole from opposite directions. This creates a stitch that is not only visually distinctive but structurally superior: if one stitch breaks, the others hold.

A single tote bag requires over 3,000 individual stitches, each pulled to the same tension by hand. It's meditative, precise work that cannot be rushed.

Edge Finishing

The edge of a leather piece reveals everything about its quality. We use a multi-step process: edges are first trimmed with a bevelling tool, then sanded smooth. Natural edge paint is applied in thin layers — typically four to six coats — with sanding and polishing between each application.

The final result is a smooth, glossy edge that is water-resistant and will maintain its beauty for years. This process alone can take several hours per piece.

Hardware & Assembly

We use solid brass hardware — buckles, clasps, zippers, and rivets — sourced from specialist manufacturers in Japan and Italy. Each piece of hardware is hand-set and tested. Zippers are by YKK Excella, the finest available. Nothing is plated, glued, or hollow.

After final assembly, every piece undergoes a 32-point quality inspection. We check stitch consistency, edge finish, hardware alignment, and overall symmetry. Only pieces that pass every check receive the Bulberry mark.
